Kruxmind's scientific basis
Public page / methodology. Written so anyone can fact-check it: every claim links to its peer-reviewed source, and every limitation is stated by us before anyone has to point it out.
In one sentence
Kruxmind measures your real cube-solving performance and turns it into useful signals for improvement. We don't measure your brain, we don't measure your intelligence, and we don't promise benefits that science doesn't support.
What we measure and what we don't
What we measure: observable data from your solves — times, consistency, pauses, errors, phases, turn pace. It's all measurable behavior on your device. When you see a metric in Kruxmind, behind it is a calculation on your own data, not an estimate of your performance state or your brain.
What we do NOT measure:
- We don't measure brain activity (EEG). Kruxmind is not a neurological device. When we mention brain regions or wave bands, they are correlates described in the scientific literature, never something the app captures from you.
- We don't measure intelligence or "improve" it.
- We don't diagnose anxiety, ADHD, or any condition. Kruxmind is not a substitute for professional health support.
What we build on (and you can verify it)
Kruxmind is built on peer-reviewed research. These are our anchors, with direct links:
- Zarei et al. (2025), Experimental Brain Research. Recorded the brain activity of experienced speedcubers while they solved the cube and performed four cognitive tasks (planning, visuospatial ability, spatial working memory, fine motor skills). Kruxmind reproduces that same task battery, measuring behavioral performance. DOI: 10.1007/s00221-025-07104-w (open access).
- Uttal et al. (2013), Psychological Bulletin. Meta-analysis of 217 studies: spatial skills are trainable and the improvement transfers to other spatial tasks. DOI: 10.1037/a0028446.
- Meinz et al. (2023), Journal of Intelligence. Cube-solving ability is associated with fluid intelligence. Important for understanding the direction: ability helps you learn the cube, not the other way around. DOI: 10.3390/jintelligence11010018.
- Dresler et al. (2017), Neuron. Training memory techniques reorganizes brain networks and improves recall — the basis for why memorizing algorithms is a trainable skill. DOI: 10.1016/j.neuron.2017.02.003.
What science does allow us to claim — and what it doesn't
The key distinction in this field is near vs. far transfer:
- Near transfer (what does happen): practicing the cube improves the cube and very close skills —simulated rotation, sequence planning, manual dexterity—. This has solid support.
- Far transfer (what is NOT supported): that training the cube makes you generally more intelligent, improves your grades across the board, prevents dementia, or treats clinical conditions. The best meta-analyses of cognitive training conclude that this general effect is essentially null (Sala & Gobet, 2017, DOI 10.1037/dev0000265; Gobet & Sala, 2023, DOI 10.1177/17456916221091830).
That's why you won't find in Kruxmind promises of "makes you smarter", "prevents Alzheimer's" or "treats ADHD". We don't make them because science doesn't support them.
Honesty about the limits of our sources
We'd rather tell you this ourselves than have you discover it by fact-checking:
- Zarei's study is correlational, with 13 participants, all men, of experienced level (best average time ~17 s) — not world champions. It does not measure training or demonstrate causality. It's a snapshot of what happens in the brain during cubing, not proof that the cube improves abilities.
- Its most striking correlation (occipital delta activity and execution) was recorded with head movement, which can introduce noise; the authors themselves note this. That's why we don't use it as a selling point.
- Speedcubing already appears in systematic reviews of sports neuroscience (Huang et al., 2026, Frontiers in Psychology, DOI 10.3389/fpsyg.2026.1794692), which confirms it is a legitimate and emerging field of study — though still young and with small samples.
About the concentration audio (binaural / ambient)
Kruxmind includes an optional ambient audio with rhythms in the theta, alpha and beta bands, intended as focus/calm support. The effect of binaural beats is not scientifically proven, and this audio does not reproduce or induce the brain activity from Zarei's study. We offer it as ambience, not as treatment. It can be heard in two ways, with the same set of waves: Binaural (a different tone in each ear; best with headphones) or Ambient (a pulse that works without headphones, also on a speaker).
Our stance
We measure what can be measured and don't promise what science doesn't support. If you fact-check our sources, we want you to find exactly what we say — including the limits. That is the basis of Kruxmind's credibility.
